San Francisco Meetup 2013
August 1, 2013San Francisco in late July 2013 was the first time that I had actually met up with other teenagers who shared my passion for portrait photography. The six of us, Adrian, Logan, Michelle, Danielle, Dana, and I met through a mutual friend on Instagram and had discovered that we were all in San Francisco during the time. After meeting and getting to know each other for weeks, we decided that we all wanted to meet in person and shoot together. This idea, often known as an Instagram meetup, has been done by many groups of photographers all over the world, but mostly occurs amongst teenage photographers. We had seen pictures and heard stories of various successful photowalks and Instagram meetups, and the six of us decided to plan our own. By talking to each other and working out our schedules, we found a time, day and location in which we wanted to shoot together. After begging our parents for days upon days, all of us somehow managed to convince them to let us meet and take photos with what they thought were “dangerous strangers from the Internet”. Finally, the day came for us to meet. We all met in the San Francisco Golden Gate Park, and after meeting each other, immediately started talking about anything and everything. All of us seemed to click and get to know each other extremely well within the span of 2 hours, while also taking hundreds of photos along the way. We also learned a lot from each other, including our shooting styles, camera profiles, settings, etc. After the shoot, we all helped each other with editing and asked for advice concerning everything photography as well as other things. We made a group and to this day, this group is still sometimes active. Overall, I met lifelong friends and gained great advice from that first meetup.
